Disaster Risk Reduction Worldwide


Disaster risk reduction for communities is becoming increasingly popular around the world. Thandie Mwape Villadsen is a Humanitarian Diplomacy Coordinator at Partners for Resilience/Netherlands Red Cross. She has almost 20 years of progressive international experience in development and international affairs at the global level (New York, Geneva and The Hague), and worked in-country in East Timor, Kosovo, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Zimbabwe. She has developed skills in influencing policies, strategy development, negotiations, facilitation, forging partnerships, inter-governmental relations, inter-agency coordination, analysis/reporting, overall project management. She also has experience in climate/environment, leading transitions from emergency response to recovery/development, and disaster preparedness. She trained as a journalist at Evelyn Hone College in Zambia and has two Master Degrees in International Affairs (Global Diplomacy from University of London- SOAS); and another in Business Management (Leading Innovation & Change from York St John University in England). She has also undertaken certificate studies on sustainable development with University of London and International Humanitarian Law with Harvard Law School.


In her current role working as Global Policy Advisor on a Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs funded initiative- Partners for Resilience (PfR) she is responsible for leading a multi-cultural Team of experts around the world in policy dialogues to influence decision makers within governments, inter-governmental organisations and other partners (private sector, academia) to adopt/mainstream proven approaches for resilience building to disaster risks. She also leads and supports Red Cross National Societies and local PfR partners in their policy work on disaster risk reduction, and in doing so ensure close coordination with various parts of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC). She identifies synergies between IFRC and PfR activities and networks to support continuous exchange of experiences and incorporation of best practice on humanitarian diplomacy (HD), in the context of PfR and more broadly where required.
